ROMI ROMI BODYWORK

We work pressure points in the body

To let go of aches, pains and stress we hold

In order to feel light, energised, open and free

In Maori, Ro means internal, and Mi is to agitate. We work on pressure points in the body to wake it up: to release any aches we may have, shift our energy and strengthen our presence.

Maori bodywork uses hands, feet, knees and elbows to work the body. We also use Rakau (wooden sticks) which are perfect to work specific areas of the body. I will show you how you can work the body yourself (Mahi Rakau, which means self healing) with specific exercises you can do daily to maintain the feeling of lightness and freedom of movement.

When we do body work, the body is fully clothed so just come in comfortable clothing you can move in. Appointments are set for an hour so that we have time and space for you to arrive and settle before and after.

THE BENEFITS

The purpose of Romi Romi is well being.  To release any aches in the muscles and calm the mind so that you get off the table feeling way better than when you got on it!

The purpose of Mahi Rakau (using wooden sticks) is to teach the practices for self-healing so that you can work your own body. Mahi Rakau is great for self understanding and self care which has benefits long after the session ends.

About Section

ABOUT ME

I am a Mother, Consultant, Teacher, Exec-coach, lover of learning, developing people, Essex and New Zealand.

I run a successful consulting and coaching practice, Head and Heart Leadership where I work alongside CEOs and their senior teams. 7 years ago I started training with Atarangi Muru and her team of Maori Healers, in both New Zealand and Europe. As of Jan 2025, I will be extending my practice to bodywork.

As a student of Atarangi, what struck me were the principles which sat at the heart of her teaching, from which everything else flowed.

  • The body never lies It doesn’t know how to. It speaks more truth than we do. It will pick a place to stress or burden in the body and sit there until we listen.

  • Heal the mother, heal the family  Be conscious of and take care of the body. When we are in balance, it has a ripple effect on all around us.

  • Align the heart In Maori tradition there are 3 hearts: in the mind (thinking/seeing) in the stomach (gut feel/trust) and the heart (love/connection).  The mind can get in the way. The quieter it is, the more we can hear with the other two.

  • Empowerment Give power to others, which is about creating independence vs. dependency.  Own our power which is about authenticity, being who we are, not moulding ourselves on others, or over giving.

About

Having spent a 30 year career in a corporate context, practicing and teaching the principles of mindset, relationship building, clear strategy and communication, I saw a real fit. Particularly in the foundations of balance, authenticity and alignment. The revelation for me came from a deeper understanding of the body, its relationship to the mind and our emotional realm.. This is something I had experienced myself, and I could see in the people I coached.

When leaders were not operating at their best, where there was stress, fear, disconnect, an inner conflict at play, it would show up in their body as well as their relationships with others. Tight shoulders/neck, persistent lower back pain, heaviness in the stomach, sleeplessness and an overthinking mind. All detrimental to resilience over time. When leading at their very best,  there was an energy that would shine and an ease that was contagious which made others want to follow. When up against challenges or facilitating change, these leaders would navigate through with creativity and clarity which made great results more likely. Most importantly, at their best, there was a self-awareness of their strengths and an understanding of what it took to keep them sharp. They consciously prioritised and strengthened the foundations for success:

  • Physical: quality of sleep, food, water, exercise, boundaries between work and home

  • Emotional: quality of their relationships, creating cultures built on trust, open and honest feedback

  • Mindset: ability to stay present, make decisions, learn from the past, envision the future, move with pace

  • Spiritual: connection to a compelling purpose and values, what matters most, what has meaning and truth

This is why I love this work.  To help others be at the best, more of the time.  To empower others to learn and keep growing.  To support others to find success through alignment: head, heart and body.

MY TEACHER

Atarangi Muru is an incredible Mother, Grandmother, Teacher and Healer who started learning ancestral Maori healing arts as a young child from her Grandparents and Elders from Ahipara, Far North, New Zealand.

Ata runs a busy clinic based at Kaitia hospital where her team support members of  the local community. She also leads residential workshops to pass on teachings for both Maori and International students/practitioners.

Ata generally tours USA and Europe for 3 months a year. When dates are confirmed I will share them here if you are interested in sessions or one day workshops whilst she is in the UK. She also runs monthly zoom workshops (1.5 hours) which teaches Mahi Rakau (self healing using wooden sticks) which I would highly recommend. Link below if you would like to know more.
